XIII WORLD FORESTRY CONGRESS | 18 – 25 OCTOBER 2009
BUENOS AIRES - ARGENTINA

In June 2005, during its 128th session, the Council of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) selected the Republic of Argentina as host country and organizer of the XIIIth World Forestry Congress. This event – held every six years – will take place from 18 – 25 October 2009, and is expected to attract about 6,000 participants from more than 160 countries.

“Forests in development - a vital balance” is the theme of this XIIIth World Forestry Congress and it will be tackled from the social, ecological and economic perspectives. This will provide an opportunity to analyze this natural resource’s functions on the local, regional and global scales. The relevance of every type of forest and its contribution to the planet’s sustainable development will be stressed. Internationally renowned speakers, academic institutions, producers, environmentalists, indigenous and rural people, forest managers, technical experts and policy makers will be summoned to share ideas on forestry and offer a truly global view on the future of world’s forests.

Institutions from various sectors of Argentina are involved in organizing this important event. The Congress will include one week of presentations, conferences, round-table discussions, parallel events and exhibits. In the following fortnight, assistants will have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of study and tourist tours to various types of forests throughout the country. This will enable them to learn about different activities within the national forest sector while visiting the fascinating landscapes and natural environments of Argentina.

Argentina has about 33 million hectares (80 million acres) of native forests and an additional 1,1 million hectares (2.6 million acres) of planted forests, covering a broad spectrum of ecosystems, including humid, sub-tropical, temperate, semi-arid, and arid forest types. Thanks to an extensive network of protected areas, the different tours will offer a unique opportunity to combine the study of diverse forests through actual on-site visits with beautiful forest scenery.

The country and Buenos Aires in particular offers optimal conditions for hosting and organizing an event of the magnitude of the World Forestry Congress. The facilities are excellent and the city displays many tourist attractions, a wide range of hotels, as well as plenty of cultural and scientific events.
